Bit Errors in DSL Connection

Problem Description

Transmission errors can occur on DSL (or other access) connections, leading to errored packets arriving at the customer premise.  Errored IP packets are typically discarded and hence appear as lost packets.

Symptoms

Will result in packet loss that can occur with a low level of jitter (i.e. not due to congestion/ buffer overflow).  Typically, statistics are available from the interfaces of switches and routers that can indicate if packet errors are being detected.

Resolution

Identify faulty loop (DSLAM port, cable or DSL modem).
