Ethernet Layer 1/2 Problems

Problem Description

Ethernet is commonly used to interconnect system components at the head end and within the network.  A variety of layer 1/2 problems can lead to packet loss including duplex mismatch, bad Ethernet cables and connectors, and hardware faults.

Symptoms

Packet loss occurs within the network however the jitter level may be low (unlike congestion in which packet loss is normally accompanied by a high level of jitter).

Resolution

Examine Switch and Router interface statistics for signs of excessive collisions, bad CRCs and other MAC statistics.
